Hillock Canada Diary No.31
Dallas Fort Worth

On September 2nd of this year I received an invitation from Lynne Summers, one of the advisers of The Gillock Association.
She is an artist and she invited me to attend her 60th birthday party.
I had not seen Lynne for many years and I missed her. So I decided to fly from Montreal to Dallas to attend. Dallas! Where Gillock had lived!

Lynne's children had prepared everything for the reception. There was a barbecue party at the park in the town of Coppell. About forty guests came for the festivities. People enjoyed the conversation, the friendship, and the food. Two of the participants were a couple from Huston. Lynne and I had visited them about eight years ago. It is very nice and touching to meet old friends and to greet new friends.

Dallas was quite hot, and when Tiffany, Lynne's daughter, opened the box that contained the birthday cake, she found there were many ants crawling over the icing on the cake. Tiffany blew off them amid the cheers!

Tiffany and her husband Eric took me to a Japanese restaurant in Dallas. I miss the taste of real Japanese food because most of the Japanese restaurants in Montreal have adapted their dishes to the food preferences of Western people. But here, I found more than ten kinds of Japanese sake, and all the dishes were instances of authentic Japanese cooking. Everything was served on the dish very delicately and beautifully, exactly as in Japan.

One more thing. I very much enjoyed the visit to the gallery of Pamela Summers, Lynne's sister. She is a ceramicist and she lives in the suburb of Fort Worth. She is lucky because her house, her atelier, and her gallery are all close by. I love pottery and I love her pottery. I could spend many hours there! http://www.cliffhousestudio.com/

In August of this year, Lynne started to teach art in middle school. The school is a public one, so she had to qualify by passing an employment examination. She had very good test results -- 90%. I am sure for most people it is not easy to go back to school to teach, especially at the age of sixty, not to mention make the effort to concentrate to study for the examination. I am very proud of her.

The purpose of the trip to Dallas was to celebrate Lynne's birthday. I learned that we should not give up on life. If we have a strong will and we continue to love, everything will come out right in the end.
